Bodmin town itself is fairly limited and the high street for one is not what it was, once a thriving community, the town has expanded and you’ll find the more common shops and restaurants on the outskirts in business parks closer to the main A38/A30 junction. However the area of Bodmin and Bodmin Moor is a wide area; reaching places such as Siblyback Lake, Coliford Lake, Cheeswring, Bolventor, Camelford and Jamaica Inn. Bodmin Moor is almost split into to by the A30 running directly East to West through the Moor and the county as a whole. “Bodmin Moor, designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, is a remote, bleak heather covered upland granite moorland still grazed by moorland ponies and bisected by the main A30 road. Similar, but smaller and lower than Dartmoor, it was densely populated in the Bronze Age and has many archaeological remains. The best know are three stone circles of the Hurlers, Rillaton Barrow and the hill fort of Stowe’s Pound all near Minions, and the stipple Stones Henge and Trippet Sone Circle on Hawkstor Downs near Blisland.
Natural features include Borwn Willy at 420m (1,377 ft), the highest point on both Bodmin Moor and in Cornwall, and the rockier Rough Tor, the second highest point, readily accessible from Camelford with over seventy hut circles on its north west slope. The Cheesewring, at Stowe;s Hill near Minions, is a popular wind eroded granite formation of circle stones balanced on top of each other whilst the natural lake of Dozmary Pool. the centre of the moor south of Bolventor, is according to legend there Sir Bedivere thew King Arthur’s Sword Excalibur. Also at Bolventor is Jamacia Inn Museum & Daphne du Maurier memorial room.
Ruins of tin and copper mines can be seen to the south eats of the moor at Minions and include the ruined engine houses of the Phoneix United and South Phoneix Mines. The Minions Heritage Centre is in Houseman’s Engine House. Other attractions include, Golitha Falls, managed by English Heritage at the southern edge of the moor near Redgate and Wesley Cottage at Trewint, near Altarnun where John Wesley, the founder of Methodism stayed. There are reservoirs at Colliford Lake and Siblyback Lake Water Park.” – AZ
