Wedding Photography is all the same! A statement. Its such a shame when I hear this, but from people looking in from the outside you can understand why at an initial or even an in depth look but in the wrong areas how someone could come up with that statement. On the occasion or two I have heard this, I’m always keen to send a list of 5 or 10 different wedding photographers who are all clearly doing different things, because those who have adapted over time or who are new to the industry in the past few years tend to all being doing slightly different things. Everyone has their own way of doing things.
I heard something recently that stated something like: ‘nothing is unique, nothing is new, everything is just one step more than the last step ‘ and I almost completely agree! I can’t say anything that I do is completely me. I have influences, just as everyone else does, I know the technical things that every other photographer in the world knows. I have the tools and camera manufacture that nearly 50% of all photographers worldwide have, I’m not unique in the things I know, but I am unique in my collection of what I know, formulas and how I execute my ideas. I’m Me.
My point is that, yes we do all do the same thing, by definition we all take pictures, and yes many of us ‘photographers’ do the exact same thing, in the exact same style, with the exact same approach – but some of us may be a little different – we have thought about doing things a little differently – we run businesses after all, and these are our USPs!
So how about considering a different view point. Get down low, get dirty, have a roll around on the floor :) – it feels good being a kid again :)
