The Lizard Peninsula | Cornwall Weddings

Weddings on the Lizard, like weddings in South and West Cornwall, such as weddings near Penzance or in St Just, have so much potential because of the open landscape and environment you find yourself in. The Lizard is no difference with the peninsula accessible mainly using the A3083 that runs directly south from Helston, which is in turn accessible 15 minutes along the A394 both from Falmouth & Penzance. Key areas to search for wedding venues in the area would include Lizard Point itself, Penhale (slightly further inland) and to the east, St Keverne and Coverack, where Dollar Point and Perprean Cove can be found.

“‘The Lizard’ refers to the peninsula south of Helston and the Helford River. Formed largely of serpentine a greenish rock seen in many local buildings, it includes the flat central heathland area of Goonhilly Downs, a part of the 4000 acre Lizard National Reserve with its nationally important flora and fauna. Lizard point is the most southerly promontory of mainland Britain and has a twin octagonal towered lighthouse (only the east tower is in use) dating from 1752, the oldest mainland lighthouse in Cornwall. The east coast has the impressive Black Head known for its serpentine, but it is the west coast which is most spectacular, especially Kynance Cove, famous for its dramatic rock formations, the largest outcrop of serpentine in Britain and the Devil’s Bellows blow-hole on Asparagus Island. Mullion Cove has a tiny harbour, nearby to which is the Marconi Monument at Poldhu Cove marking the site of the wireless station which transmitted the first wireless signal across the atlantic in 1901. Cadgwith and Coverack are small and attractive finishing villages.

Places to see include the National Seal Sanctuary with its orphaned seals at Gweek. St Keverne Church contains the graves of many sailors who perished in shipwrecks on the treacherous Manacles, a series of half submerged rocks between Lowlands Point (noted for its raised beach) and Manacle Point. The Devil’s Frying Pan near Cadgwith and the Lion’s Den at Bumble Rock, east of Lizard Point Lighthouse, are spectacular holes in the cliffside, formed from collapsed sea caves.” – AZ
