Towards the end of last year I took a two week holiday with a good friend and fellow photographer after the core wedding season had come to an end. In late November I took a flight to Bangkok via Dubai, and also visited Phuket, Ko Phi Phi and Chang Mai whilst in Thailand. It was a rather busy two weeks taking in 7 flights, one rather long bus journey and plenty of things to see, do and experience. It is every easy to say I had an awesome time, but that wouldn’t explain the experiences of travelling and meeting the people we did, and although we were far from ‘travelling’ it was very cool to meet some people who were and also spending some time with a great bunch of americans who were learning to live and work abroad, some of which have become good friends and whom I am sure I will have the opportunity to meet again in the near future. (fingers crossed)

One of the highlights of the mini trip was witnessing the Loi Krathong near Chang Mai at Mae Cho with some great new friends. Some pictures of the lanterns from the festival you will see below, but they really don’t do it much justice, the most amazing 30 seconds is seeing around 10,000 sky lanterns all being released at the same time, and that I just had to watch and put my camera down for. – I do feel sorry for the other westerners there that experienced it through an iPhone screen!

For the pictures I did shoot, all are shot on a Film Nikon FM2 with a prime 35mm mostly at f/2, the colour frames are shot on Kodak Portra 160 and the black and white is Ilfrod XP2, I am yet to scan all the negs into the computer so here are a few test prints straight from the lab. I love shooting film when away, an escape from digital, lighter kit and much more discrete, not to mention the aesthetic and deeper thought process which I just adore.

I literally shot just 3 rolls of film equalling 108 frames in two weeks, here are just 20…

europe preparations

I will soon be setting off on a road trip around Europe with a good long term friend of mine (Alex) for approximately 6 weeks. We are travelling through France, Belgium, Germany, Hungay, Czech Republic and Italy. We are almost ready to go, and have everything prepared that we can think we may need. However the most indecisive thing for me to decide on was what photography kit to take. The pressure was on from the planning days over a year ago for me to sort this out, and initially I though I would just take my 5D mark 2 and a 50mm 1.4. Sorted…or not ? After thinking about it I realised I had an opportunity here to really do something a little different. After much deliberation with friends and myself in particular I have opted to leave all my pro digital kit behind and instead take my 35mm Canon 1N film body and 30 roles of film.
