Hipstamatic Travel Photography Italy, I posted some of these pictures in my Italy blog several months ago, however I have finally got around to presenting my pictures so thought I would post another blog with the finished product and some of my favourites. Hipstamatic is a great app for the iPhone, unlike apps such as Instagram, it allows you to be more creative and challenging due to the way the settings of the camera (the presents) are chosen before you touch the screen to take the image. It therefore becomes a more intuitive and thoughtful process, thinking before and not after. Its also surprising how you start thinking differently about composition due to the square format of the app, which resembles medium true format film.
On the flight out to Rome, Italy last summer, from Bristol, UK, I sat on the plane and decided which settings I was going to use for the entirety of the trip, allowing for all the images to be presented together as a set, which I have now finally done in a medium format style. Using the John S Lens and BlacKeys SuperGrain Film in the Hipstamatic app for iPhone I shot nearly 700 pictures whilst away for 2 weeks travelling around such cities in Italy as; Rome, Pompeii, Sorrento, Florence and Venice. Now presented, unedited from the presets applied in the Hipstamatic app, in a digital format contact sheet strips of medium format film, a total of 36 frames and then printed at approximately half a meter square, mounted and framed.
More information can be found about the Hipstamatic app here, and of course can be downloaded from the Apple App Store.
Below are a few pictures that I have taken of my final presentation of my chosen 36 frames that sum up my two week travel around Italy, then below that I have picked out 10 frames from a few different cities in Italy. I would love to here your thoughts of the final piece of work and welcome you to comment at the bottom of this post. I am off to Spain in a couple months for a 3 week trip, and have in mind a similar challenge for myself. Hope you like.
