Portrait photography in and around Cornwall is something I enjoy doing, especially during the week when it breaks up my routine which consists of many tasks revolved around being sat at a computer Monday to Thursday. Its nice to be able to get out of the office for a few hours during the week, rather than having to wait all week until the inevitable wedding on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, or all three (thats another story).

Last week I had the pleasure of photographing one of my fellow peers back from my school days, a little younger than me, yet her talent for music is clearly there. Jessica is thinking of soon travelling to the USA to live in order to push her music ideas for her future, meanwhile trying to launch an online presence for herself, Jess contacted me to produce some portraits of her and her music. We spent a couple of hours at various locations around Cornwall including woodland, a rape field and a beach to create a dynamic set of pictures from which Jess can hopefully draw what she needs from them when she needs it, not fitting any one specific product or outcome but so she can pull social networking material, website material, posters or even CD/Album covers if she needs it.

I have to admit I had a great time, it was brilliant that all the time we could both share ideas and build on each others imagination, something you only really get with other artistically minded people, or very keen brides! I’m no closed door, in fact, one idea that came from Jess that I was not very keen on to start with turned out to be one of our favourite pics of the day.

Jess took about 60 pics away from the day after our meeting a week later when we both looked through the pics together, its also great when both myself and the client pick out ruffly the same favourite 20 frames, below are a sample of these pics.

Traditional Portrait Photography Cornwall

Its been a while since I have used my studio as much as I have recently. With the winter weather, darker evenings and the November Portrait offer that I was offering, I have been back in the studio and not out on beaches, parks, walks on the moors e.c.t. Not that I don’t enjoy doing all those things, in fact I would much rather be out than in, but in a way it has been nice to be back in a Studio for a short while. Experimenting with different things and in the case of this shoot communicating with people a little differently.

Brother & Sister, Jenna & Joe contacted me a couple weeks prior to our studio session and informed me they needed some christmas and birthday presents for friends and family and the shoot was to give them some simple, more formal than my usual style, portraits of themselves. The shoot itself was fairly simple in nature with a only a handful of suggested poses for the pair of them and one change of cloths half way through. It has never been my preference to direct people into a position, make/ask them to smile and then click my shutter, but I understand that at some points in people’s life, even with the new documentary and reportage styles that I openly embrace, the ‘old style’ posed pictures are still needed now and again. My job, as any of my clients would expect is to make what could be as boring as standing with a white backdrop and being blinded by studio light a little more fun and make the pictures a little more interesting, just giving the shoot a theme can really help.

Anyway here are a few of the pictures from my fairly short studio shoot with Jenna & Joe.

Cornwall Studio Portrait Photographer

I don’t do a huge amount of studio photography during the year, however when the winter months set in, it certainly gets harder to go out and about. In the lead up to christmas a family who are increasingly regular clients of mine decided to have a few studio style pictures done. Now we have all seen the white backdrop and lots of light style of a studio shoot (a certain high street brand made this very popular around 10 years ago). It is my aim to make what I do a little different and therefore the majority of my studio work is low lit and uses the minimal about of light (usually no more than three lights), which is great for little kids who can often find a large studio with lots of gear fairly daunting.

The family recieved just shy of 80 pictures on disk in full resolution from amount 90 minutes playing in my studio. We spent approximately a total of 4 minutes shooting formal style pictures and for the rest of the time I just left them to it and pulled some funny faces and did a bit of dancing in the hope of entreating the child, not scaring her. For this shoot I only used one light for the entire set of pictures and here are three of my favourite shots.

studio and location portrait shoot – Menheniot – Liskeard – Cornwall

Last Sunday afternoon, the Howard family, from Dobwalls, Wales & Cambridge got together for a family portrait shoot in my studio at Menheniot. I tend to use the local village hall for studio shoots, purely because of the large space to work in, not many studios are well over the size of a tennis court in length. The beauty of such a long building is the ability to be able to shoot from much further away and use my second favourite lens, namely by 70-200 f/2.8. The distance also, I believe, gives the family, couples, or other clients a more relaxed experience because I am not right in their face with a camera.
